Baking and Cooking. Is there a difference?

Hello everyone and today I am going to talk about cooking and baking and their non-similarities

Baking and Cooking: Is there a difference?

Baking:
When I think of baking I think of buns,  brownies and cakes. Baking is ingredients like eggs, flour, vanilla extract, sugar, baking powder and chocolate. Baking is getting out a baking sheet, a mixer, a wooden spoon and a spatula. I think of baking with my Gran and teaching my younger cousins to bake. Baking is fun and you enjoy it. Baking is when you make something sweet and its a treat like dessert. Baking is sweet food. Baking is a snack or a dessert.

Cooking:
When I think of cooking I think of chicken, noodles, curry and rice. Cooking ingredients are mostly healthy ingredients like vegetables, Mozzarella, beans and tomato sauce. Cooking is getting out a frying pan a chopping board and a sharp knife. I think of my Mom cooking dinner and me also cooking too. Cooking is for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner - for set meals. You have to cook because you can then feed yourself and without it you will go hungry. Cooking is savoury food.

These are the things that come to mind when I think about cooking and baking. And I think there is a huge difference between the two. Comment what you think!

I hope you enjoyed that little fact file on cooking and baking and I hope you will join me again on my next blog.

Here is a video on 5 easy after school snacks. (Easy!) This video is on a YouTube channel called "Tasty". Go check them out.

Ready Steady Cook!

Welcome back everyone to my blogs. I hope your day was great too. While I was rereading my other blogs and deciding what do write for my next ones, I realised I mentioned Ready Steady Cook to you all and you probably don't even know what that is, so in this blog I am going to talk about Ready Steady Cook.

Ready Steady Cook is a competition in my school that goes on in early March. It is a competition where you bake/cook what the theme of that year is.
To explain a bit more, this year the theme for Ready Steady Cook was "Your favourite dessert with a twist". You enter a form into the Home Economics Department and they choose 20 finalists out of however many people enter.

For my Ready Steady Cook I baked meringue with lemon curd and raspberry coulis. My two favourite desserts are Meringues with lemon curd and raspberry coulis and trifle also. For my dessert for the competition I made meringues with lemon curd and raspberry coulis but in trifle form so they were in layers.

The competition was really high and the person who won deserved it, her dessert tasted good! She made an apple cake with a really cool design on the top with apple peals in roses and apple sticks. I can't even explain it. It was amazing!

In the competition we have 1 hour and 30 minutes to make these baked goods and then they announce the winners, 1st, 2nd and 3rd but this year they have a new thing where they also have 3 highly commended placed winners. I think its good that they added those 3 highly commended because it gives people a chance to come a place and gives them confidence saying that they are almost there to winning.

I used Rachel Allen's recipe for the lemon curd and it tasted great.

- This is Rachel Allen on BBC and she is making Meringues and lemon curd at the start of the video.
- Go to 1 minute and 35 seconds and that is when she starts making the lemon curd.

I hope you enjoyed this blog and I hope you will read my next blog post.

Enjoy,
Katelyn

History of Baking.

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog.
Last time I talked about my baking during a week which is called 'My First Blog' so make sure you go and check that out. This week I am going to talk about the history of baking and where did it come from. I am hoping in this blog to learn more facts about baking and I hope you will too.

Cakes:
Now, lets talk about cakes. We have them for every special occasion, birthday, anniversaries, going-away parties, weddings and lots more. There are lots of different types of cakes, cheesecakes, sponge, cupcakes, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, jam and cream cakes and there are loads of more types of cakes.

History:
Egyptians were the first people (Recorded in History) in the world to bake a cake, although their baked cakes were more bread like. They would put honey, nuts and dried fruits in the cakes to give them more flavour. If I had to guess which country made the first cake, I would not have thought Egyptians were the first to bake a cake. I guess I am learning facts in the process of my blog!
The word 'Cake' comes from a Viking word 'Kaka'.

Ovens:
The first electric oven was invented in the 1880s -1900s and then were all over the world in 1920s. Its crazy how they were invented and yet we are still using them today. To be honest I don't know where I would be without an oven. How would we bake? How would we cook our food? I have no idea!

That's all for today everyone. I hope you have a great week and that you will join me next time.

Enjoy!

My First blog.

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. This is my first time writing a blog so if I'm awkward please ignore that and just laugh along.

For those of you who don't know me, I love to bake. I just did a competition in school called Ready Steady Cook. Apart from messing up one of my presentation and the fact that I couldn't hear the judge because he mumbled and so I had to say "What?" every ten seconds it was great.

What do I bake in a week?

From day to day during a week I would normally bake about 3 times. Baking is my go to hobby when I am bored or stressed. It always relives my stress! I love baking and I don't know where I would be without it (Cheesy right?). I would normally bake something small and easy to make like buns with raisins, mars bar squares, top hats or something like flapjacks. I would make buns most of the time but that depends on my mood.
I know some people who hate baking because they don't have the right equipment and find it hard to bake using a wooden spoon instead of a mixer. My family is very fortunate to have a kitchen aid mixer which makes it more easier to bake. And maybe that why I love baking.
I started baking with my Gran when I was in primary school and I loved it so much. I remember baking with my sister when she really got into baking and I also remember not getting along with her because we both wanted to do the same things!

Cookies are one of my favourite foods. I love them so much and they are my go-to food.
If you are new at reading my blog then welcome and I hope you continue reading my blogs!

This is a video if you are beginners at baking. These are really good desserts and I think you should try them out! These video i got from a youtube channel called Tasty, go check it out.
